RYA Cruising Instructor Courses.

This course is designed for people who would like to turn their love of sailing into a rewarding, challenging and fun career. The one week course will teach you how to become an RYA Cruising Instructor and enable you to effectively teach the RYA cruising scheme up to Day Skipper level.

Course duration: 6 day course. Starts from 12 noon Monday.

Price of course: £400 - £500 depending on dates.(click here for prices in euro)
This price includes accommodation, food and drinks onboard, mooring fees etc....

Pre-course requirements: Yachtmaster Offshore. Up to date Radio Operator's Certificate; First Aid Certificate, Medical and Survival at Sea Certificate. If you do not have any of the above qualifications we can arrange for you to do these courses.

A good instructor should be able to teach his/her subject enthusiastically and clearly, generating interest and confidence in the student and a desire to do well. The best instructors are good sailors who can run cheerful, well organised and instructional courses, not an easy task, but one which the Cruising Instructors Course will go a long way in achieving.

Sailing Instructors need to have a broad range of skills which have to be adapted for the type of vessel, the level of the student and the prevailing conditions. It’s not practical or indeed advisable to lay down hard and fast techniques of teaching and the Instructor will gradually develop his/her own style over time anyway. But there are many guidelines which will help the new Instructor avoid certain pitfalls and improve his/her teaching skills.

Summary of subjects covered on RYA Cruising Instructor course:
1, Safety.
2, The RYA syllabus of theory and practical courses and exams.
3, Communication and practical demonstrations.
4, How to brief and debrief to give encouragement.
5, Assessment of students performance.
6, Time & people management.
7, Care of guests and boat maintenance.
8, Trafalgar Sailing advice to Instructors looking to work in the sailing industry.

Trafalgar Sailing currently has a position open for a full time (approx 3 weeks per month) for Yachtmaster Cruising Instrustor (to teach Competent crew and Day Skipper level) or Yachtmaster Instructor ( to teach up to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster prep. courses).
