Trafalgar Sailing is the oldest R.Y.A. sailing school in Gibraltar, but we are young at heart! The team is made up of a group of friends. Although all have their own interests, they all share one joy; the natural lifestyle outdoors and the sea....

Kite surfing Beach party Windsurfing Jim sailing on Velsheda

Jim Field was born on an island in Vanuatu, West Pacific. After boarding school in England he became a lifeguard on Brighton beach. He then spent 20 years as a deep-sea diver and travelled most of the world working at up to 600ft underwater. During those years he was a windsurfing fanatic and sailed extensively on cruising yachts. He has been race crew on 'Velsheda' for the past eight years and competes four or five times a year at regattas worldwide with members of Team NZ.

He likes to get the best out of his students and teaches the crew to work together as a team.On his time off, you can still find him at sea windsurfing, kite-sailing, scuba diving or reading nautical books.!

Keith Charlton is a jordy! He and his wife Steph left their high powered jobs in the U.K. and bought a fleet of three new yachts to join the sailing industry full time. They sailed the yachts down to Gibraltar and now teach Trafalgar sailing R.Y.A courses from Competent Crew to Yachtmaster level. Keith also runs the Gibraltar, Canaries and Cape Verde islands qualifiying passages. Keith is an expert sailor, an absolute pleasure to sail with and is passionate about the ocean. In his spare time (of which there is not much as Cheif Instructor!) he can be found sailing with his wife Steph.

Nick Collie is French Canadian. He spent his early career touring with Rock Stars and organising concerts worldwide.

His lust for sailing took over and he ventured into skippering on mega yachts, charters in the Caribbean and yacht deliveries. He did his Cruising Instructors course with Trafalgar Sailing and we all adored him so much we never let him go!

Having sworn that he would never instruct sailing he has been surprised to find that he loves every minute of it. His warm nature, dry sense of humour and reassuring knowledge of sailing and the sea is appreciated by all his students. (Also his tuna fishing skills for which he still holds the record!).

Damien Smith has sailed all his life and comes from a long family of fanatic sailors. Alongside his sailing career on super yachts in the Caribbean and two Atlantic crossings on a 100 foot ketch, he taught sailing and outdoor pursuits to special needs children in the U.K.
He did his Yachtmaster in Gibraltar and started teaching RYA courses in Palma de Majorca (but returned to Gibraltar as we have better wind!). He now teaches with Trafalgar sailing, His passion for sailing and gift in communicating these skills are valuable to novice and experienced sailors alike.

Alan Bishop joined the Army at 17 and served in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, Belize, Northern Ireland, Germany (oh and was also in the first Gulf war).   In 1972 he transferred to the Army Air Corps and became a helicopter pilot. After a long career of jumping out of planes and teaching gliding he retired to go cruising in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Canaries and Cape Verde Islands on his own boat. He then became a Cruising Instructor in the UK but missed the sunshine and has been teaching Trafalgar sailing ever since.

He has a wealth of knowlegde in sailing and cruising, the patience of a saint, sense of humour and would be six inches taller if he didn't have such seriously bandy legs!

Pete Galtress was born in England and started sailing dinghys as boy. He went onto racing and delivering boats while he studied for his degree in Engineering. To cut a long story short, he did his Yachtmaster with Trafalgar Sailing and we soon recognised that not only was he a talented sailor but he had all the characteristics we look for in an Instructor.

His total enthusiam for sailing and the sea is contagious, this combined with his gentle manner makes him a great Instructor.

Kevin Wlliams grew up on the South Coast of Wales where being on or in the water was a part of family life. He started sailing aged six crewing for his father. He raced dinghys for many years at National and International level including Olympic trials in 1995 and the laser Worlds in 1996.

Whilst he owned and enjoyed his own cruising boats, his career as a Marine Engineer took him travelling on cruise liners all over the world. From there he spent the next twelve years working in the Fitness industry before joining Trafalgar sailing teaching RYA sailing courses.

He is a natural trainer, motivating and giving confidence to his students.

Stephanie Charlton loves sailing and plays an active role in making the practical and theory courses a huge success. Steph runs our First aid courses. She also owns Cannysoks which manufacture a range of personalised clothing and gifts.

She worked in the corporate industry teaching team leadership skills before buying a yacht and sailing from England to Gibraltar. Stephanie gives online theory support for our students studying before their course and helps with the customer care for our clients.

Shorebased crew - Catherine O'Hanlon
found her 'sea legs' at the tender age of 1 when she left England aboard her parents boat 'Vashti' to sail around the Med. She worked in the U.S. Co-ordinating Educational European tours before returning to Gibraltar, and started Trafalgar Sailing School with her father Peter nine years ago. She now organises R.Y.A. courses from Gibraltar, Spain, Canary Islands and Cape Verde islands. Please feel free to contact her anytime cathy@trafalgarsailing.co.uk

Cathy is passionate about Spain's stunning landscape and loves rockclimbing, snowboarding, diving and riding Andalucian horses on the beach. So if you would like to extend your holiday to include any of these activities, she can arrange this a suggest local accommodation.
